Once again this year, Novatize surveyed the Canadian population on eCommerce consumer trends. The data was collected via a survey orchestrated by marketing research firm Léger. What trends will truly revolutionize Canadian consumption in 2024? What is the level of adherence to these trends today, and what are consumers’ intentions for the future? Before embarking on the development of a new eCommerce functionality, it’s important to evaluate whether it will add real value for your customers.

Some interesting data on eCommerce trends
Online payment methods
Payment services such as Amazon Pay, Shop Pay or Apple Pay are gaining in popularity, particularly among 18-34 year olds, with usage reaching 30%. This trend highlights the importance for online merchants to diversify their payment options to better suit the preferences of this age group in order to maximize their conversion rates. However, credit cards remain the most popular payment method, with 80% of respondents using them.
Online shopping for used products
57% of Canadians are inclined to buy used products online. This statistic reflects the growing demand among Canadians for second-hand shopping to save money, reduce their environmental footprint and consume more responsibly, for example. For online merchants, diversifying their offer with used products can attract a broad customer base, meeting the expectations of a market in search of sustainability and value. Unsurprisingly, the age group most inclined to buy used products online are 18-34 year olds (66%).
Loyalty program incentives
When it comes to incentives to join eCommerce loyalty programs, 70% of respondents put free delivery in their Top 3 incentives, with 35% ranking it as their first choice. This data underlines the importance for eCommerce companies of offering free delivery to attract and retain customers. This strategy can also encourage an increase in the average shopping basket, making the shopping experience even more attractive for consumers.
In 2024, eCommerce consumer trends in Canada continue to evolve rapidly, influenced by consumers’ growing expectations for unified shopping experiences. Personalization and regionalization of sales strategies will be essential to meet the varied expectations of consumers. By adopting these practices, you can not only improve the performance of your eCommerce business, but also build lasting loyalty relationships with your customers.
