Every year, DotDev provides a glimpse into the strategic direction that will shape Shopify’s future. This year, the message went far beyond new features: artificial intelligence is transforming the way developers build on Shopify, redefining tools, processes and even the role of development teams.
This article brings together my key takeaways from the event, along with insights from Alex, Lead Developer at Novatize.
One of the biggest takeaways from DotDev was that artificial intelligence should no longer be viewed as just another development assistant.
Over the past several months, Shopify has invested heavily in initiatives such as the Shopify AI Toolkit, Dev MCP, Shopify UCP and more broadly, agentic approaches. While these technologies have already been on the radar of Shopify developers, DotDev 2026 confirmed that they are no longer experimental innovation projects, they now sit at the core of Shopify’s platform vision and strategy.
For Alexandre, the real transformation is organizational.

The goal is no longer simply to accelerate software development. These tools also accelerate exploration, prototyping and problem-solving while making knowledge, workflows and specialized expertise much more accessible across teams. One of the most memorable presentations at the event focused on River, an internal tool developed by Shopify. Initially, River was simply connected to the company’s internal Slack workspace. Today, it has evolved into a full AI-assisted collaboration platform.
To support this evolution, Shopify consolidated much of its codebase and internal knowledge into a monorepository, giving River access to significantly more context and allowing it to operate across the organization.
Connected to this environment, River can explore code, answer technical questions, write or modify code, run tests, review pull requests and propose fixes. Even more impressively, it can create pull requests to improve its own code, including its skills, prompts and configuration. While every change is still reviewed and approved by humans, River now actively contributes to its own evolution.
Beyond its technical capabilities, what stands out most is how seamlessly River is integrated into everyday work. Because it operates directly within Shopify’s public Slack channels, developers can observe how colleagues use AI, learn from their approaches, reuse proven solutions and continuously learn from one another. AI becomes a powerful engine for knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the organization.
Another presentation that particularly stood out focused on technological inertia.
For many years, certain ideas were simply unrealistic because they required months of development. Today, with AI agents, many of those same ideas can be explored or prototyped in just a few hours or days.
Technological inertia appears when developers continue approaching projects with yesterday’s mindset: using AI only as an autocomplete tool, manually performing tasks that could be automated, dismissing ideas because they were once too complex or expensive to implement, or consistently relying on traditional architectures without reassessing the new capabilities the platform now provides.
It also shows up in the way we evaluate AI tools themselves. Sometimes a single unsuccessful attempt is enough to conclude that a tool cannot perform a given task, even though its capabilities are evolving at an extraordinary pace. A feature that seemed impossible only a few weeks ago may now work perfectly. Technological inertia therefore also means judging today’s tools based on yesterday’s limitations rather than their current capabilities.
As these technologies continue to evolve, so does the role of the developer. It is no longer just about writing every line of code, but increasingly about defining the problems to solve, guiding AI agents, evaluating proposed solutions and making the technical decisions that ensure the quality, security and long-term sustainability of projects.
Contrary to common assumptions, DotDev confirmed that SEO is not disappearing with the rise of AI assistants. On the contrary, conversational search engines continue relying on the existing web to understand, validate and recommend products.
